Passports, visas and entry requirements

What passport validity and visa requirements apply?

International travellers should ensure their passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond their travel dates and that the name matches the booking exactly; you are responsible for checking and obtaining the correct Australian visa and any transit visas based on your nationality by consulting your government’s travel advisories.

Should I carry copies of my documents?

Yes, carry printed or digital copies of your passport photo page, visas, insurance and flight details, and leave a copy at home, as these are useful if originals are lost or stolen.

Fitness, mobility and age

How fit do I need to be?

The tour is graded “Easy – Relaxed Pace” but includes regular short walks to lookouts, beaches, waterfalls and through rainforest (up to around 7 km on the longest day), so travellers must be mobile enough to walk unaided on uneven ground and manage steps.

Are there age or medical restrictions?

The tour is not suitable for infants or children 11 and under; travellers aged 12–17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and participants over 75 must provide a doctor’s certificate at least 30 days prior, confirming they are fit for an easy active holiday.

Is the tour suitable for mobility‑impaired travellers?

Unfortunately no; due to vehicle design, terrain and walking distances, this tour is not appropriate for those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters or walking frames.

What medical precautions should I take?

Consult your doctor before travel for personalised advice and any recommended vaccinations; carry a basic first‑aid kit and any prescription medications in original packaging, and check your government’s guidance for rules on bringing medicines into Australia.

Travel insurance and safety

Is travel insurance mandatory?

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical care and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended for all travellers and is mandatory for international guests; policies should ideally also cover trip cancellation, delays and lost belongings, and proof of cover and emergency contact numbers should be available before joining the group.

What safety measures are in place on tour?

The tour follows local safety regulations, uses licensed operators for activities and national parks, and your group leader may alter the itinerary in response to weather, road closures or other safety concerns to protect the group.

Money, tipping and contingency funds

What currency is used and how should I manage money?

Australia uses the Australian dollar (AUD); cards are widely accepted in cities and towns, but it is wise to carry some cash for small purchases, and note that some businesses may apply a small card surcharge, while ATMs are limited in more remote areas.

Is tipping expected in Australia?

Tipping is optional; you may choose to tip for exceptional service (for example, 10–15% in higher‑end restaurants or a modest gratuity for your leader), but it is entirely at your discretion and not compulsory.

You may consider tipping your leader for excellent service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline 4-6 AUD per person, per day.

Tipping your tour guide?

Tipping your group leader or local representative is completely optional, but always appreciated if you feel they’ve provided outstanding service during your trip. There’s no set amount — it’s entirely up to you. As a general guideline, many travellers choose to give around AUD 7-10 per person per day if they wish to tip.

Should I have a contingency fund?

It is sensible to keep an additional emergency fund (for example, around the equivalent of USD 500) for unforeseen expenses such as weather‑related itinerary changes, extra accommodation, or transport disruptions not covered by your insurance.

Luggage limits and packing

How much luggage can I bring?

Each traveller may bring one main bag up to 20 kg and one day pack up to 7 kg due to limited vehicle storage; larger or additional luggage is by request only.

Are there any “must‑bring” items?

Essential items include travel documents, insurance information, reusable water bottle (at least 1L), day pack, camera, adapters, small locks, basic first‑aid kit, insect repellent, and optionally a money belt, earplugs and a small torch or headlamp.

What is the weather like along the route?

Weather varies from temperate in Sydney and the Hunter to tropical in Queensland; summer can reach the high 30s°C, while winter is generally mild, but coastal areas can see sudden showers and cooler evenings, so layers and wet‑weather gear are recommended.

Beach, snorkelling and marine safety

How can I stay safe at Australian beaches?

Always swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches, never swim alone or under the influence of alcohol, check safety signage, ask lifeguards for local advice, and if you get into trouble, stay calm, float and signal for help by waving your arm.

What should I know about snorkelling on this tour?

When snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef or in the Whitsundays, always follow crew instructions, stay near your group or buddy, be aware of currents and sun exposure, wear reef‑safe sunscreen and protective clothing, and avoid touching coral or marine life.

Are there stingers or dangerous marine life?

In tropical Queensland, marine stingers such as Irukandji may be present, particularly in warmer months; operators provide protective stinger suits, and if stung, you should exit the water, notify crew immediately and follow their first‑aid procedures.

Route details

8:30AM – Quality Hotel Ambassador Hotel, 196 Adelaide Terrace, Perth, Western Australia

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Western Australian Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World  Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Learn more about EcoTourism: https://www.ecotourism.org.au/

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

First Aid

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

Do you cater to special dietary requirements?

Please notify us if you have any dietary requirements or medical conditions prior to departure, that way we can make any necessary arrangements.

What do we eat?

Our guests will enjoy a fresh, healthy picnic dinner with a glass of wine that is sourced from local produce. We are happy to accommodate any special dietary needs however we must be notified of this at the time of booking.

What is a suitable age for this tour?

Child policy for this tour is 6 years old and over, due to the nature of this tour it’s not suitable for infants or children 5 years and under.

How much luggage can I bring on tour?

We ask that guests travelling on day trips bring small day packs and hand luggage only as we have limited storage onboard our vehicles. Suitcases and large backpacks must be put in storage at your hotel or bus station lockers prior to boarding our vehicles.

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

A moderate level of fitness is required to complete the 1-2 hours of walking trails within the Pinnacles Desert.

How many people are on this tour?

We operate this tour with a maximum of 28 people; our vehicles are 28-seater Mitsubishi Rosa buses. This vehicle makes for a safe & comfortable journey (air-conditioned), with large passenger windows for unobstructed views. It is possible that the trip will be conducted in a larger vehicle on rare occasions, based on demand.

What happens if it rains, will the tour proceed?

In the event of rain or inclement weather, your travel experience will still go ahead, unless contacted by the provider. This tour would only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions, whereby it’s not safe to travel into the Nambung National Park.

What is the temperature in Western Australia?

The weather in Western Australia can fluctuate and be extreme at times. It is not unheard of for temperatures to reach over 40+ degrees Celsius during the day and in the evening the temperature drops dramatically. Please ensure you have checked the average temperatures for the time of year you are travelling and have packed adequate clothing. Predominantly, the hottest months are Dec-Feb (summer) and the coolest months are Jun-Jul (winter).
