Tour Description

Join us on the adventure of a lifetime as we uncover the very best Kakadu has to offer. We leave tropical Darwin travelling through the rich floodplains towards Kakadu National Park, this 20,000 square kilometre area is teeming with wildlife, important Aboriginal rock art sites, and diverse landscapes.

Our first stop on this 1 Day Kakadu Tour is an optional Jumping Croc Cruise on the Adelaide River or a visit to the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve. The traditional lands of the Limilngan-Wulna people (who are active in the reserve’s management), one of the most spectacular places to explore the diverse wildlife park of the Top End, home to numerous species of birds, turtles, water pythons and of course the iconic Saltwater Crocodile.

We’ll stop in at the Corroboree Park Tavern, where you are able to support locals and purchase your picnic lunch and snacks for the day ahead, and continue on to Bowali Visitor Centre to learn more about the rich Aboriginal culture and Indigenous cultural history of this special place. We’ll visit the famous *Cahills Crossing in search of crocodiles at this eye-opening stretch of water, the only road access point between Arnhem Land and Kakadu National Park.

Visit the home of some of the oldest and best-preserved rock art galleries in the world, Ubirr Rockand marvel at the amazing rock formations of the East Alligator region of Kakadu as it meets the West Arnhem plateau. Depending on seasonality and accessibility to Ubirr, we may instead visit Kakadu’s other main rock art attraction at Nourlangie Rock, traditionally also known as Burrungkuy, where we can marvel at the art along the shaded rock shelters, appreciate the colourful birdlife and hope to catch a glimpse of a number of species found no-where else on the planet.

Introducing

There is a reason that this unique and simply breathtaking Kakadu National Park is world-famous, and we want to share it with you!
With almost 20,000 square km of diverse terrain encompassing wetlands, ancient woodlands, and stunning and age-old rock formations, not to mention being home to a third of Australia’s bird species and a fifth of its mammal species, we are not exaggerating when we say there is nowhere else on earth to experience the true wonder of nature quite like Kakadu.
On this one-day Kakadu Wilderness tour, prepare to discover a deep connection to our environment as we travel to the lands of the Bininj and Mungguy People. Their continued management of this park in association with Parks Australia is the key to why this region thrives and supports unparalleled wildlife and ecosystems.

A must-do travel destination when visiting the Northern Territory!

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Darwin Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World  Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for the traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

First Aid

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

A water refill station is provided, we recommend you bring a 1.5-2L refillable water bottle

How much luggage can I bring on tour?

Can you swim on this one-day Kakadu Tour?

We do not have the opportunity to visit any swimming holes that are not inhabited by crocodiles on our Kakadu day trip. Alternatively, guests can join our 1 day Litchfield tour or our 4 day/5 day Kakadu Litchfield tour where you will have plenty of opportunities to swim in waterfalls and plunge pools.

What are the two optional add‑ons early in the day tour?

You’ll start with a choice between:

  • Jumping Crocodile Cruise on the Adelaide River, see mighty saltwater crocs leap out of the water.
  • Wetlands visit to Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, ideal for birdwatching and seeing freshwater ecosystems

What wildlife might I see?

  • Croc Cruise: Expect thrilling sightings of wild saltwater crocs performing impressive leaps, alongside expert commentary
  • Wetlands: Spot native birds (like herons and parrots), freshwater turtles, water pythons, and possibly non-leaping crocodiles in their natural environment.

Which is better for photography?

  • Croc Cruise: Offers dramatic action shots, crocodiles lunging out of water.
  • Wetlands: Ideal for capturing calm, scenic wildlife and birdlife moments.

Do I need a National Park pass?

We would like to inform you that a NT Parks Day Pass is required for entry for anyone who has purchased the Fogg Dam Wetlands (KD-B) fare type for day trips. Please note that this pass is not included in the tour price. We recommend purchasing it in advance to ensure a seamless entry on the day of your tour. Absolutely! Many of our guests are solo travellers. Our small-group setting makes it easy to meet others and enjoy a safe, social experience.

What items are recommended for the tour?

Packing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, a towel, a water bottle, a camera, and a light jacket for more relaxed morning or evening temperatures is advised.

What is the temperature like in the Top End?

The weather in the Northern Territory can fluctuate and be extreme. It is not unheard of for temperatures to reach over 40+ degrees Celsius in the dry season and in the evening the temperature drops dramatically. Please ensure you have checked the average temperatures for the time of year you are travelling and have packed adequate clothing.

What happens if it rains, will the tour proceed?

In the event of rain or inclement weather, your travel experience will still go ahead, unless contacted by the provider. This tour would only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions, whereby it’s not safe to travel into Kakadu National Park.

When is the optimal time to visit Kakadu from Darwin?

From May to October, the dry season in Kakadu is recommended for visiting due to cooler weather, lower flood risks, and accessibility to most park attractions.

What happens if I’m late or miss the pick-up?

If you’re not at the designated pick-up location at the scheduled time, the tour may proceed without you. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early and keeping your phone on for any updates. Late arrivals are considered no-shows and may not be eligible for a refund.
