Do I require travel insurance for the Top End?
It is highly recommended that all passengers have personal travel insurance, given we’re exploring remote parts of the Northern Territory with limited access to health professionals in the event of sickness or injury. Autopia Tours is not authorised to provide information on the type of plan or policy options available. This can be provided by an accredited local travel agent or from your preferred insurance company.
What is the temperature like in the Top End of the Northern Territory?
The weather in the Top End of the Northern Territory during the wet season, from November to April, can be hot, humid, and unpredictable. Daytime temperatures often exceed 30-35°C, with occasional spikes above 40°C. Evenings can bring some relief, but temperatures may still remain warm and sticky. This period also sees frequent rainfall, which can be heavy at times, particularly in the peak wet season from January to March.
It’s important to check the average temperatures and weather conditions for the specific time of year you’re traveling, and ensure you’re prepared with appropriate clothing for both hot and wet conditions. If there’s rain or inclement weather, your tour will generally still proceed, unless you are contacted by the provider with updates.
Should I be concerned by mosquito bites?
The Australian government recommends that people visiting Kakadu National Park during the wet season (from November to April) get vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis. If you are concerned please consult your doctor before travelling.
Here are some additional tips to avoid mosquito bites
- Wear long, loose-fitting clothing
- Use insect repellent that contains DEET
- Stay indoors during peak mosquito-biting times (dawn and dusk)
- Sleep under a mosquito net

What kind of vehicle do we travel in for this Kakadu tour?
For other extended tours in the Northern Territory, the mode of transportation will depend on the number of passengers and fleet availability. The vehicles used for these tours include
- 24-seater Rosa
- 28-seater Yutong
- 17-seater Isuzu 4WD truck
These vehicles are generally chosen for more regular tours where high clearance is not as crucial. In the event of a breakdown or other logistical issues, alternative vehicles may be deployed. The passenger capacity for these tours ranges from 8 to 20 people, ensuring a more intimate and personalised experience, particularly when traveling in the smaller 4WD trucks for smaller groups.
For the Kakadu tour, particularly during the wet season when high clearance is essential due to challenging road conditions, you will most likely travel in a 4WD Isuzu truck. This vehicle is specially equipped to handle the rugged terrain and weather conditions commonly encountered in Kakadu National Park during this time of year.
