10 Day Perth to Broome Tours Overland

Wander the Pinnacles Desert and be amazed by the strange limestone pillars rising out of the sand. The location is often described as looking like the surface of the moon and makes for some interesting photo opportunities along the way. Hike through the gorges of Kalbarri National Park. This stunning scenery has been formed over millions of years as the Murchison River carved its way through the red rock. We’ll hike down into the bottom of the gorge at the Z Bend and stroll over to the iconic Nature’s Window, a favourite photo opportunity of many travellers.

The colours and scenes of the World Heritage Listed Shark Bay region will leave you in awe. The stark contrast between the blue sea and the red sand amazes many guests to the region. Step back in time with a visit to the Stromatolites, meet the Monkey Mia dolphins and marvel at the unique Shell Beach. The region is also well known for emus, so be sure to have your camera handy!

Enter another world with a visit to the Ningaloo Reef. Whether you join a boat tour or head to the beach on your own, this is a place you will never forget. The Ningaloo is a fringing reef, meaning it is accessible right from the shore! Head out on a tour in search of manta rays, turtles and reef sharks, or just grab some snorkel equipment and go straight off the beach! It may be lesser known than the Great Barrier Reef, but the Ningaloo is sure to impress and leave you with lasting memories!
Join one of the optional boat tours and interact with some of the Ningaloo Reef’s famous locals. Dance with the manta rays, swim alongside the whale shark, view humpback whales, explore dense coral gardens or dive and search for nudibranchs and octopus (all at own expense).
Explore the ancient gorges of the Hammersley Ranges with a visit to Karijini National Park, where you’ll spend 2 whole days uncovering its many secrets! Marvel at the banded iron layers and colours of the rocks, hike through gorges and cool off in the swimming holes. Then of an evening, watch the colours change as the sun sets and fades, giving way to a sky full of stars each evening.

** This tour is operated by Adventure Tours Australia in partnership with Autopia Tours.

Day 1 - Pinnacles Desert and Sandboarding

We’ll leave behind the most remote capital city in the world in search of Western Australia’s natural wonders. Our first stop will be exploring the strange limestone formations known as the Pinnacles, often described as looking like another world. Then it’s time to try sand boarding down Jurien Bay’s massive sand dunes, which will have you laughing with your new companions. We’ll make our way into the town of Kalbarri for the evening with hostel accommodation. Around 7 hours travel time. (L,D)

Day 2 - Kalbarri National Park and Shell Beach

It’s an early start today to take full advantage of Kalbarri’s beauty. We may even spot some kangaroos on the way in to the National Park, so have your cameras at the ready. We’ll start the day with a walk down into Murchison Gorge at the Z Bend, named for the shape of the river system, with an opportunity along the way to try your hand at abseiling (own expense, $40 each for 2 descents). Then it’s a quick drive across the National Park for a shorter walk down to the iconic Nature’s Window for some spectacular photos. After lunch, we make the drive into the Shark Bay region with a stop to admire the unique Shell Beach. Be prepared for some stunning scenery as we drive into Shark Bay, with beautiful views of the coast. We’ll stay overnight in a hostel in the most western town in Australia, directly opposite the beach. Around 4.5 hours travel time. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

This morning we make the short drive over to Monkey Mia to meet the famous dolphins! Wild dolphins here swim into the shallows each morning where you are able to get up close and personal with these amazing animals from the shore! We ask guests not to wear sunscreen on their lower legs and hands for this experience. Then we’ll make the scenic drive back down the peninsula with a stop at the world-famous Stromatolites, some of the oldest known and extremely rare organisms on Earth! Then settle in for the afternoon as we drive up to our hostel in Coral Bay, the gateway to the Ningaloo Reef! Around 7 hours travelled. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Coral Bay

You’ll have most of the day to explore the Ningaloo Reef at your own leisure. Choose to join a boat tour and head out to swim with manta rays and turtles, or relax and enjoy the reef in a glass bottom boat cruise (all own expense, your guide can give you details on tour options and booking is subject to availability). Or take the day to relax on the pristine beach where you can swim and snorkel at your own pace. Either way, Coral Bay is a place you won’t forget. In the afternoon, we’ll make the drive towards our private campsite at Yardie Creek Homestead. Around 2 hours travelled. (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Exmouth

It’s another day of swimming and snorkelling today. Depending on the season, you may be able to join a whale shark tour and swim next to one of the biggest fish in the sea! Or for those that enjoy scuba diving, try joining the world class Navy Pier dive or Murion Islands dive (all own expense and subject to availability). If not joining a tour, your guide will take you for a tour of the Cape Range region. We’ll head up to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse for stunning views over the ranges and reef. Then spend the afternoon swimming and snorkelling at the beautiful Turquoise Bay before spending another night at our private campsite looking out for emus and kangaroos. Around 1.5 hours travelled. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - Exmouth to Karijini National Park

We leave the coast this morning and head into the red desert of the Pilbara and Karijini National Park, often described as the highlight of trips to the West Coast. You’ll be amazed at the size of some of the cattle stations out here and just how remote some people live. In the afternoon, we’ll stop into the town of Tom Price, known for its iron ore mining. You may even spot one of the huge trains used to cart the iron ore to the coast! Then we’ll spend the next 3 nights in a private campsite at the Karijini Eco Retreat. Around 9 hours travel time. (B,L,D)

Day 7 and 8 - Karijini National Park

Spend the next 2 days exploring the wonders of Karijini National Park. There are many adventures to be had here and most tours include peering into where 4 gorges intersect at Oxley’s Lookout, hiking through the bottom of Dales Gorge, swimming in the beautiful Circular Pool, swimming over to the waterfalls at Fern Pool, the adrenaline pumping Handrail Pool and shuffling your way through the spider walk into Kermit’s Pool. If that’s not enough excitement for you, join a canyoning day tour with West Oz Active to abseil, paddle and climb through the gorges (own expense and seasonal). Then enjoy the brilliant night sky show each night, one of the best you may ever see! (Activities in Karijini are at the discretion of the guide and are subject to accessibility and conditions). Around 2 hours travelled. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Karijini National Park to Pardoo Station

We’ll make our way back towards the coast today, with a visit to Port Hedland along the way. Marvel at the size of the iron ore industry here as we pass through the town and witness huge container ships being loaded up near the port. After lunch, we make our way to Pardoo Station where we spend our last night together as a group. Around 6 hours travelled. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Eighty Mile Beach and Broome

Enjoy this morning exploring 80-Mile Beach. Go for a relaxing walk or try to find your fortune in ‘sea-dollars’ along the beach (though we ask that you admire and not remove these items). Then it’s our final drive into Broome, where your guide will give you a quick town tour before we have to say our farewell’s and drop you at your accommodation.
