14 Day Sydney to Cairns East Coast Encompassed

Begin your journey on this Sydney to Cairns East Coast adventure, viewing the iconic Sydney Opera House. Enjoy the sights of Sydney Harbour and view the Harbour Bridge as we catch a ferry out to Watson’s Bay, with spectacular scenic views along the way. Then have lunch like a local with some fish n chips near the beach before heading into the city to enjoy the nightlife. Indulge in some local delicacies from the Hunter Valley wine region, where you’ll get to try some wines, cheese, chocolate and vodka. The region is well known for wildlife too, so we may spot some koalas and kangaroos. Marvel at some of the East Coast’s brilliant coastal scenery, with stunning walks in Sydney, Forster and Noosa. The coastline here is magnificent and you may even spot dolphins or whales cruising past along the way.
Visit Dorrigo National Park, part of the World Heritage Listed Gondwana Rainforest region. This forest has been shaped by millions of years and is home to some wonderful creatures like red-necked pademelons and wompoo fruit doves. We’ll even get a chance to cool off with a swim at Dangar Falls. Join in the laid-back surf culture of Byron Bay. Learn to surf in one of Australia’s most iconic surf locations, (own expense), join in a yoga class (own expense), relax on the beach or visit the most Eastern Point of Australia with a walk out to the Lighthouse.
Experience Noosa, one of Australia’s favourite holiday spots. Stroll along Hastings Street to explore the shops and cafes or head down to the main beach for sunbathing and swimming. We’ll also take a walk through the National Park there, alongside the beach. Get set for adventure with a day of 4WDing on Fraser Island! World Heritage listed and the world’s largest sand island, this is one place sure to impress. View secluded beaches, beautiful rainforests a shipwreck and lakes along the journey. There’ll even be time for some swimming so be sure to take your swimmers along.
Unwind in the beautiful Whitsundays. Chill out in Airlie Beach and then take a cruise around the Whitsunday Islands. Stop in at the iconic Whitehaven Beach, often voted one of the World’s best beaches. Swim and snorkel around the reef and sunbath on board the boat. Familiarise yourself with Indigenous culture in the Tully Gorge National Park, where you can learn to cook some traditional foods around a campfire and meet some locals who’ll take us out to a swimming hole in the rainforest.
Explore the Atherton Tablelands, swimming in a crater at Lake Eacham, spotting birdlife and witnessing natures marvellous creation, the ‘Curtain Fig Tree’. Enjoy the underwater playground of the Great Barrier Reef with a day out on the water, where you can discover a new world snorkelling around the coral reefs. Search for turtles, reef sharks and everyone’s favourite, ‘Nemo’.

Day 1 - Arrival in Sydney

Arrive in Sydney at your leisure and enjoy your time exploring this wonderful city. There’ll be a booking under your name at the Macleay Hotel when you arrive. Why not go for a wander through Woolloomooloo, stopping at Harry’s De Wheels for a hot dog or pie. Or wander through the bustling Kings Cross district in the evening. If you arrive early enough, head out to the iconic Bondi Beach. No meals supplied.

Day 2 - Sydney

 Meet your guide and the rest of your traveling companions early for a café breakfast. Then we’ll take you to see the sights of Sydney on a guided walking tour. View the Sydney Harbour Bridge and marvel at the iconic Opera House. Then we’ll head onto the water with a ferry ride over to Watson’s Bay to enjoy Aussie fish n chips for lunch, before taking a stroll to search for dolphins from the coastal cliffs. We’ll head back to the city for some dinner and then for those still feeling energetic, it’s off to experience some of Sydney’s nightlife. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Hunter Valley and Newcastle

 We leave the big city this morning in search of something more relaxing and indulgent; the Hunter Valley. Look for wildlife with the help of your guide as we journey through the Hunter Valley region, as there may be koalas and kangaroos out and about. A trip to the Hunter Valley isn’t complete without sampling the local fare, so we’ll enjoy a gourmet lunch in the Valley and also sample the wine, cheese and chocolate. Afterwards, we make our way to Newcastle for the night, where we can head out for an evening of live music. (B,L)

Day 4 - Forster and Port Macquarie

 After breakfast, we make our way into the Great Lakes region of NSW. Take in the beautiful coastal views with a walk along Lakes Way and then all of the surrounding area by climbing to the lookout. You’ll get some free time to enjoy this wonderful place at your own leisure afterwards. Head to one of the beautiful beaches for a swim and some relaxation or try hiring a stand-up paddleboard or kayak. We’ll leave Forster in the afternoon so we can be in Port Macquarie in time for a sunset cruise! (B)

Day 5 - Dorrigo National Park 

 We’ll start today with a visit to a koala hospital, where you can learn about how sick and injured koalas are cared for and rehabilitated for return to the wild. Then it’s a change of scenery as we leave the coast and head into lush rainforest region. Dorrigo National Park is within the World Heritage listed Gondwana Rainforest region and is sure to impress with its gorgeous scenery and beautiful waterfalls. You may even sport a red-necked pademelon! For dinner, we’ll go to a traditional Aussie pub. (B)

Day 6 - Dorrigo National Park to Byron Bay

Spend another morning enjoying the Dorrigo National Park tranquillity and have your swimmers handy for a swim in the bottom of Dangar Falls. Afterwards, we’ll make our way to the famous Byron Bay, known for its laid-back lifestyle and beautiful beaches. Stand at the most Eastern point of Australia at the Cape Byron lighthouse, where you may see dolphins and whales just off shore! (B)

Day 7 - Byron Bay

We’ll visit an organic farm as a group today, where you can pick your own ingredients for a healthy lunch, and then the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own leisure! Wander through the quirky shops, try some yoga, relax on the beach or join an activity such as sky-diving, ballooning, surfing or snorkelling (own expense). We recommend you pre-book any activities in advance to avoid disappointment. (L)

Day 8 - Noosa

Today we’ll cross the border into sunny Queensland with our first stop there being Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, a beautiful coastal town well known for its shopping and surfing. We’ll take a walk through the scenic National Park and then how you spend the evening is up to you. Noosa has a great night life, or just relax at your hotel. (B)

Day 9 - Fraser Island

It’s another day of adventure as we head over to the World Heritage Listed Fraser Island for some 4WDing! This is the world’s largest sand island and it even has a highway that is entirely sand, so 4WD is the only way to go! We’ll also enjoy walks, swimming, coastal and rainforest scenery along the way. Then it’s another night in Noosa. (L)

Day 10 - Airlie Beach

Today we’ll fly from Brisbane up to Airlie Beach, part of the Whitsunday Coast. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy Airlie Beach at your own pace. Explore the town, go for a swim or a drink or just relax by the lagoon, it’s up to you. (B)

Day 11 - Whitsunday Islands Cruise

Enjoy a beautiful day out on the water as we sail around the Whitsunday Islands. We’ll of course make a stop at the famous Whitehaven Beach, known for its brilliant white sand. There’s also opportunity to swim and explore the reef with some snorkelling or relax and sunbathe on board the boat. We’ll spend another night in Airlie Beach. (B,L)

Day 12 - Tully

Enjoy the scenery as we take the train from Airlie Beach up to Tully. Once there, an Indigenous family will take us into the lush rainforest to enjoy a beautiful swimming hole. We’ll get to learn about ‘bush tucker’ in the Tully Gorge National Park, before getting to prepare some traditional food around a campfire. Then once its dark, we’ll go out in search of some Aussie wildlife on an evening spotlight tour. (D)

Day 13 - Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands

Today we really head into the tropics, making our way towards Cairns via the Atherton Tablelands. We’ll make a stop at Lake Eacham, where you can cool off with a swim in the clear blue waters of the lake. You may even spot some birdlife here. We’ll then stop to have a look at the strange ‘Curtain Fig Tree’, a wonderful example of nature’s unpredictability and beauty, before making our way into Cairns.

Day 14 - Great Barrier Reef

We’ll spend our last day together exploring the Great Barrier Reef on a day cruise. Another World Heritage Listed natural wonder, there is so much to see when you snorkel around the coral gardens you won’t want to leave this underwater playground! We’ll also be able to learn about this incredible reef system and what is being done to try to protect it. After a quick freshen up, we’ll then spend one last meal together sharing stories of their Sydney to Cairns East Coast journey before it comes to an end.

  • This tour and vehicle is not suitable for children or infants. Minimum age is 18 years old.
  • A moderate level of fitness is required to complete the walks, you will need to be prepared for walk between 3-9 km on some days.
  • This tour covers long distances and there is often little or no phone signal, a satellite phone is carried your guide encase of emergencies.
  • We recommend pre-booking any optional activities in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • We also recommend all guests have travel insurance organised prior to departure.

Accommodation

  • Accommodation each night is basic, with most nights camping in an Aussie swag or dome tents. Facilities can be quite basic most nights with showers not available every evening. You may not be able to charge devices most evenings.
  • Please have Cairns accommodation arranged prior to departure, as accommodation there can get busy and there will be limited opportunity to book along the way.

Food & Dietary Requirements

  • Your guide will prepare most of the meals whilst on tour, but you will have the opportunity to assist with daily activities such as setting up camp, helping prepare meals and clearing dishes. 
  • Passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they notify their travel agents or us at the time of booking.
  • Food is purchased prior to the commencement of this tour and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing.

Reconfirming Your Booking

  • Please reconfirm at least 48-hours prior to departure and notify us of any dietary requirements, medical conditions.
  • This will give you the opportunity to reconfirm your pickup location and departure time too.
  • Providing a travelling contact phone number prior to departure, makes it easier for us to find you during morning pickups

Arriving into Perth

  • Please avoid arranging flights out of Cairns until the following day after the tour finishes, in case of any delays due to traffic.
